2,5The novel is a bit like those old, oriental films, full of pathos, setting and formal dialogues. It could have been very good -because I like that genre- but there are a couple of things that have held back my enthusiasm. I had to suspend my disbelief here and there to continue to enjoy the story. Pronouns for Lan'xiu in Lan'xiu's pow are messed up (I know it's touchy subject, but hey, you come to a certain age you need to choose and stick to your guns). The relationship between Ning and Wen had to be developed in more detail, as it's now, seems only a ruse for the super happy ending. So good colors, but little substance.
