If you prefer fast pace novels The Violet and the Tom won't suit you. But, for me, the slow tempo is an essential element of this book's beauty. It strengthens and makes credible the main characters' struggle to break the chains that imprison them in their social (and ontological in Syl's case) status. Indeed, my rating is four stars, and no more, because imo the ending is rushed compared to the rest of the book.As for the epilogue I am ambivalent. I understand the author's need to see Syl and Ny secure in their "new roles", but such bravado, so close to their flight and Syl's freedom, seems a bit forced.
